Hundreds of schools are to close across Teesside during strike action by public sector workers on Wednesday. Thousands of NHS workers and council staff will be joining teachers in the walk-out in a row over pensions. HEAT generated by a North- East crematorium could be fed back into the National Grid to provide electricity. Durham Crematorium is investigating the possibility of installing turbines in two of its new furnaces to use the heat generated from cremations to produce electricity, and use the third to heat its chapel and offices. Memoria Ltd held a public exhibition of its plans to build a crematorium, chapel and burial areas at land off Derby Road - to the north of Sleetmoor Lane - in the village last month. The firm says a lack of facilities means bereaved folk currently have to travel at least 30 minutes outside the area.

Onder de vele deelnemers waren ook tientallen collega-militairen van de landmacht. Na afloop van de eucharistieviering werd het stoffelijk overschot van Fritz door een erehaag van militairen het crematorium in Baexem ingedragen. Fritz werd vorige week dood in een maisveld gevonden na maanden vermist te zijn geweest.
