RESIDENTS are starting a campaign against plans to build a new memorial garden and crematorium in Swanwick.

Memoria Ltd held a public exhibition of its plans to build a crematorium, chapel and burial areas at land off Derby Road - to the north of Sleetmoor Lane - in the village last month.

The firm says a lack of facilities means bereaved folk currently have to travel at least 30 minutes outside the area.

Facilities will include natural and woodland burial, traditional burial using flat memorials only, a ‘modern, comfortable’ chapel and a crematory.

But at an emergency meeting of Swanwick Parish Council, councillors said the three fields in the proposed site were protected from development - and they want them to stay that way.

Now residents are set to step up their campaign against the proposal.

Steve Harvey, of Swanwick, said: “There is still an awful lot of Swanwick residents who are unaware of the proposal.

“I am working with a handful of other residents on a plan to prevent this development going ahead.

“Our small group will use the parish council’s website to keep Swanwick residents up to date.”

A Memoria spokesman said: “We believe that the current proposal for crematorium development would receive support from a number of policies within the adopted Amber Valley Local Plan.”

The parish council’s new website contains information about agendas and meeting minutes and can be found at www.swanwickparishcouncil.org.uk.
