Hundreds of highways, planning and crematorium workers in London will stage strike action on Tuesday in the latest outbreak of industrial action by council staff over cuts. Around 400 members of Unison at Barnet Council in London will take action after warning that 70% of employees could lose their jobs over the next 16 months. The union said the council has already sold off a number of services, and has now put several contracts, with a total value of £2 billion, out for consultation with the private sector. A SUGGESTION has been put forward to build a memorial garden in Wilton Cemetery. It came from members of Burnfoot Community Council who had previously been told there would be no scope for an additional cemetery to be built on the estate. As there are currently no new plots at Wilton, interments are being carried out at Wellogate Cemetery. But with the impending opening of the Borders’ first crematorium at Melrose, an idea was put forward for a memorial garden instead.

A CREMATORIUM will commemorate its 50th anniversary by opening to the public on Saturday (September 10). The facility, in Writtle Road, opened in November 1961 and has held more than 97,000 cremations and 20,000 burials. Between 10am and 4pm, there will be a programme of activities, including guided tours, how to trace families using burial and cremation records, talks on wills and probate, headstone safety testing and gem cutting demonstrations.

Zij vinden Sterckwijck-Oost een goed alternatief voor de plannen van een Boxmeerse uitvaartondernemer die in de Hollesteeg een crematorium wil bouwen. Volgens buurtbewoner Theo Seijs hebben B en W, in een nieuw bestemmingsplan voor Sterckwijck-Oost dat nu bij de raad ligt, bewust de crematoriumtoestemming, die er volgens hem standaard in staat, uitgehaald. Wethouder Jos de Graaf bevestigt dat zijn college een crematorium op het bedrijventerrein niet ziet zitten.
