RESIDENTS are starting a campaign against plans to build a new memorial garden and crematorium in Swanwick. Memoria Ltd held a public exhibition of its plans to build a crematorium, chapel and burial areas at land off Derby Road - to the north of Sleetmoor Lane - in the village last month. The firm says a lack of facilities means bereaved folk currently have to travel at least 30 minutes outside the area.

Concerned villagers have raised fears over plans to build a new crematorium in Swanwick. The 7.6 acre memorial site proposed for protected open land between Sleetmoor Lane and the Wimsey Way Thornton’s factory would see 1,300 services take place there a year. Proposals also consist of a 3,000sq ft building and a 7.5 metre chimney which developers say will be screened by mature trees. But a consultation event on Friday held in the village by Oxfordshire based crematorium and cemetery developers Memoria, left many Swanwick residents dismayed.
