Concerned villagers have raised fears over plans to build a new crematorium in Swanwick.

The 7.6 acre memorial site proposed for protected open land between Sleetmoor Lane and the Wimsey Way Thornton’s factory would see 1,300 services take place there a year.

Proposals also consist of a 3,000sq ft building and a 7.5 metre chimney which developers say will be screened by mature trees.

But a consultation event on Friday held in the village by Oxfordshire based crematorium and cemetery developers Memoria, left many Swanwick residents dismayed.

Former fireman Alan Brown, 60, of Lark Hill, drove fire engines for 27 years out of the nearby Alfreton station at Turnpike Business Park.

He believes slow-moving funeral processions on Sleetmoor Lane and Derby Road will hamper the emergency services regularly using those roads.

He said: “It is an absolute joke this plan it really is, I cannot believe it has even been suggested.

“You have the situation where if you have a house fire there will be two fire engines - they already have to put their sirens on at the traffic lights on Sleetmoor Lane.
