After years of campaigning by councillors and nearby residents, the speed limit near Distington Crematorium will be lowered.

The decision to reduce the limit on the C4011 from 60mph to 40mph was approved at the county council’s Local Committee meeting.

The measure will now mean that the road, which also links villages such as Pica and Gilgarran, will have the same speed limit as that near Cumbria’s only other crematorium, in Carlisle.

Members of the county council’s local committee received a report which highlighted concerns about “perceived high levels of fast-moving traffic” using the route.

A survey showed a small percentage of vehicles were hitting speeds as high as 75mph – but average speeds were at about 41 or 42mph.

The committee heard that Distington parish council and county councillor Cam Ross have called for a 40mph limit on the road.

Mr Ross said: “Like the parish council I would also want a 30mph limit but I recognise it would be hard to impose. This new measure is in line with the other crematorium within Cumbria which also has a 40mph speed limit.”

Committee members also raised questions about whether the C4011 will be included in winter gritting. Karl Melville, county council officer, said: “Regardless of the speed limit being changed the crematorium road will now be included in the gritting route.”
