A crematorium in Hereford has raised thousands of pounds for charity by recycling metals such as hip and knee implants left behind after cremations.

Herefordshire Council said it used to bury the metal in its crematorium grounds but had started recycling the metal for charity instead.

It said it had so far donated £4,485 to MacMillan Cancer Support.

The council said only metal obtained with a family's consent was recycled and turned into new patients' implants.
'Good use'

Tim Morris, chief executive of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management, said: "The scheme has been well received by the bereaved, with only one or two families requesting the return of metals out of the thousands that have given consent to recycling."

Councillor Russell Hamilton, assistant cabinet member for the environment, said: "It is good to know that the money raised through this scheme has gone to such a good cause."

The recycling scheme has been running since 2005.
