MAJOR changes to Colwyn Bay's crematorium are set to get the go-ahead.

Proposals by the Bron y Nant crematorium, on Dinerth Road, to extend the use and size of their current site, will be considered by Conwy County Borough Council’s planning committee today (Wednesday, January 12).

The proposals include the refurbishment of the disused chapel to accommodate larger congregations, and demolishing the existing machine room and lobby on the eastern side of the crematorium. This would make room for an extension which will house new equipment which will work in compliance with emissions regulations on mercury levels.

The siting of the equipment in the new extension will also allow the crematorium to remain open throughout the work.

The work will also provide a new main access to the crematorium, which will be created from Glan y Wern Road, with an exit route via the existing car park onto Bron Y Nant Road, and improved internal circulation routes through the cemetery.

The existing access to the cemetery from Dinerth Road will be retained, and an additional five parking spaces will be created adjacent to the chapel, one of which will be for disabled users.

Councillor Phil Edwards said that he welcomed the plans, particularly given the benefit it would bring to mourners.

He said “I have, sadly, been to a few funerals there lately, and the chapel isn’t half big enough. That must be very distressing for family as they have to close the doors during the service, and that will separate people who want to pay their last respects or join the service.
“That must be desperately sad for some people, so I very much welcome the fact they’re going to extend it.”
