A man who faked his own death in an insurance scam was captured by police when they found his fingerprints on his own death certificate, it has emerged.

Alfredo Sanchez and his wife Sophie carried out insurance frauds totalling GBP1.25 million to pay off large credit card debts . However, when Sophie handed crematorium officials her husband’s supposed death certificate, her husband’s fingerprints were later found on it.

Although Mrs Sanchez was been sentenced to two years in prison after being arrested at Heathrow, her husband is still on the loose, apparently hiding out somewhere in Australia with their four children. Her lawyer claimed that the husband was the driving force behind the fraud .

Sanchez had told his wife to inform his employers that he had died while travelling abroad, who gave her GBP2,000 to travel to South America for his funeral, even after she had told life insurance companies that he had already been cremated.

As well as taking out life insurance of the value of GBP500,000 with Legal and General, Sanchez had opened a number of different credit accounts and built up huge debts . He later took out more loans and further life insurance worth GBP117,000. When Mrs Sanchez was arrested she admitted that her husband was alive.
