AN innovative community team are ‘dead chuffed’ to be on the receiving end of a £9,375 grant from National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme.

The Friends of St Helens Cemetery and Crematorium applied for the grant to run an 11 month activity programme that includes four educational talks, a Christmas wreath making workshop and community horticultural activities.

The group also plans to run workshops on tracing family trees, conservation and natural history photography.

Their treasurer Ted Forsythe said: “Everyone is delighted that we’ve been able to secure the award.

“It means we’ll be able to bring all our plans to fruition – benefiting many local people.”

Cabinet Member for Environmental Protection, Councillor Alison Bacon said: “The Friends of St Helens Cemetery have put together an imaginative, creative activity programme that really deserves this support.”

Virginia Griffin of the Friends added: “We will also be working in partnership with Cowley International College on an inter-generational project.

“Students studying GCSE woodwork will help our group to repair and make good the numerous wooden benches donated to the cemetery over the years.”

Awards for All England is a simple, small grants scheme that makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.
