FUNERAL parlors in southwest China's Chongqing have halted business because crematoriums are unable to cremate bodies due to diesel shortages.

The Longxing Funeral Parlor in Yubei District of the city said that around 10 bodies are in the parlor awaiting cremation, according to Chongqing Evening News.

The parlor said diesel stocks - which it provides to the crematorium - were used up at the weekend. A notice saying, "business suspended due to oil shortage" was pasted outside.

"Usually we cremate more than 10 bodies a day," Zhou Qian, director of the parlor told the paper. "And now almost 10 bodies have to be brought back and stored again."

At the weekend, the parlor rushed to more than 20 gas stations in the downtown area asking for diesel, but were refused by them all.

Officials also went to the Zhaoyanghe Oil Depot in Jiangbei District to look for diesel, but the effort was also in vain.

"We hope that society can help us by selling some diesel to us," said Zhou.

Other Chongqing parlors have also reportedly affected by the diesel shortage.
