HEAT from a crematorium in Taunton could soon be used to keep its offices and chapel warm. Taunton Deane Council is planning on installing a “heat recovery system” at the end of this year to recover energy from the cremator’s flue gases. According to the council the system will save around £2,400 a year in running costs. A council spokesman said they will not use energy recovered from the deceased and will harness heat that would otherwise be lost in the atmosphere.

A Carlisle city councillor is calling on the authority to apologise to a grieving mother after crematorium staff removed and binned tributes to her stillborn baby. Willie Whalen, who represents Castle ward, was shocked to discover how his constituent Nicki Chandler, 22 – who lost baby Harvey last October – had been treated. In a bid to make amends, he yesterday invited Nicki back to the council-run crematorium grounds, where her son has a special toadstool tribute, to lay some flowers. And he is now demanding a meeting with acting chief executive Jason Gooding to raise his concerns about how such a sensitive situation has been handled by staff.

THERE is, they say, only one certainty in life…and that is death. The probability associated with that certainty is that people don’t like talking about the subject unless they have to. At the Island Crematorium at Whippingham, staff have been dealing with the sensitive subject for nearly half a century now and on Sunday, August 21, they open it up to the public to mark the 50th anniversary of what is popularly referred to as the crem. The open day aims to tell people exactly what goes on. It will include just about everyone associated in the process from undertakers to stonemasons, horse-drawn hearse displays to floral displays and bell ringing. In the 50 years, almost 63,000 people will have passed beyond the curtain at Whippingham.

A crematorium in Britain is offering bereaved friends and relatives worldwide the chance to watch funerals of their loved ones on the Internet, a local authority in Wales said Wednesday. Virtual attendees can access services held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium in the town of Narberth as they happen and for seven days afterwards -- or buy a copy on DVD. Pembrokeshire council said the idea was to make people "feel part of a memorial service without being there in person". "Sometimes people discover that their relatives have a problem attending for some reason, so this offers some consolation," said crematorium superintendent and registrar David Seaman.
