PITSEA Cemetery is facing a grave problem.
It is rapidly running out of burial space with just 24 plots left, which will last for around six months.
This means new burials would move from the Basildon Council-run cemetery to one at Basildon crematorium, owned and run by the Westleigh Group – or to other council run cemeteries at Wickford or Great Burstead, which have spaces for more than another 20 years.
Members of the borough’s leisure and health scrutiny committee were to be asked, tonight (Thursday) to consider plans to remove an internal road and some footpaths in Pitsea cemetery to create another 150 burial spaces, which would last for about three years.
The work would cost £30,000 but would yield £85,000 in burial income over three years.
Another alternative would be to reuse existing plots in Pitsea cemetery by lifting and deepening them.
• There are 325 plots still available at Wickford, which would last for 20 years and 1,840 at Great Burstead, which would provide space for about 32 years.
