When non-Cypriot EU voters in Paphos go to the polls for this year’s municipal elections, a handful of key issues are likely to sway their ballots – including animal welfare, expat representation and the environment. However, few issues are likely to be as divisive - or perhaps decisive - as the proposed crematorium. For almost a decade, the idea of building a crematorium to service the large expat community in Paphos and beyond has been politically sensitive, perennially put on the back burner by the government in the face of church opposition.

Guildford crematorium has now been able to donate about £5,000 to the Shooting Star CHASE children's hospice.

POLICE are hunting for thieves who stole two urns from Enfield Crematorium. A devastated man from Essex discovered the ashes of his grandparents had been taken from the crematorium, in Great Cambridge Road. The ashes, which had been there for several years, were in bronze and stoneware urns, and would have very little sell-on value, Enfield Police said, but are of “extreme sentimental value”.

Swanwick residents have formed an action group to fight plans to build a new crematorium in the village. Memoria Ltd unveiled plans for a 3,000sq ft building with a 7.5 metre chimney on a 7.6-acre site between Sleetmoor Lane and the Wimsey Way Thornton’s factory, which would see 1,300 services take place there a year.
