A man who stabbed his mother and stepfather after his grandmother’s funeral has been given a two-year jail sentence.
Adrian Roger Leach, 39, will spend the next four months in prison followed by a year of weekend jail.
He was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court today.
Leach stabbed his mother and stepfather with a paring knife in the car park of a Mitchell crematorium in May 2008.
Leach’s barrister had argued the man was depressed and his actions stemmed from a 2002 incident in which his mother, Marie Lewis, allegedly carried out a "home invasion" during her divorce proceedings from Leach’s father.
But Justice Hilary Penfold rejected this argument, saying the 2002 incident was not a justification for Leach’s attack.
Leach will be placed on a 12-month good behaviour order after he finishes serving prison time.
