An application from a family of travellers to make their pitch in Semington permanent has been rejected by Wiltshire councillors.

The Ward family has been living on a plot of land next to Semington Crematorium, off the A361, for more than three years after obtaining temporary planning permission in 2008.

The family had applied for permission to make the land a permanent site for three pitches with space for eight caravans and the keeping of horses.

However, at a meeting of Wiltshire Council’s Western Area Planning Committee councillors voted to refuse the application, despite council officers recommending it be passed.

The application had received nine letters of objection and three of support. The site sits in open countryside, but is not on green belt land.

Semington Parish Council had written to Wiltshire Council lodging a strong objection to the application, noting that in 2008 a council report noted the site would not be suitable for permanent settling.

The Ward family are now likely to appeal the decision.
