Two rival crematoria operators are set for a fight to the death – quite literally- as councillors last night backed a new crematorium at Chatteris.
The decision by Fenland District Council Planning Committee to approve the bid by Memoria Crematoria Ltd means there could soon be rivals within a few miles of each other.
Mercia Crematoria, who operate the March crematorium, argued forcefully for the council to reject the bid by Memoria group.

7/4/2011 With damage to crematoriums and a lack of kerosene limiting the number of cremations in disaster-hit areas, local governments have begun performing burials, a practice not common in this nation.
More than 1,000 bodies had been buried in six municipalities in Miyagi Prefecture as of Sunday, according to data gathered by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

6/4/2011 Bosses at Bracknell’s crematorium are counting the cost after a herd of roe deer ate all the roses from their flowerbeds.
Bracknell Forest Council, which runs the Easthampstead Park Crematorium in South Road, has now had to fork out for 135 new rose bushes for the site after the deer feasted on the plants.
Controversial plans for a second crematorium in Fenland are set to be rejected again, despite a town council’s support.
Plans for a crematorium in Fenton Way, Chatteris, were originally granted by councillors in 2009 against the will of planning officers.
That permission was, however, quashed at the High Court last year after rival provider Dignity – operator of the new March crematorium – proved that Fenland District Council failed to consider its planning permission as a relevant factor in the Chatteris scheme.
As a result Memoria Crematoria’s application is undetermined and will be considered again at tomorrow’s meeting of the council’s planning committee.
