Sandwell's Mayor unveiled a plaque to officially open Sandwell Valley Crematorium in West Bromwich. The new chapel building opened last August, and work to convert the old crematorium into offices and landscaping the site was finished in the spring. Mayor of Sandwell Cllr Joyce Underhill was joined this morning by bereavement services staff, local funeral directors, religious leaders and representatives from Martin Critchell Architects and GF Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd, who built the new crematorium.

THE number of cremations that take place in Gwent will be reduced next year while essential work is carried out at Gwent’s only crematorium. Some families may have to have their loved ones cremated out of the county while two of four cremators at Gwent Crematorium in Cwmbran are shut down. This will allow work to meet Environment Agency targets to reduce mercury emissions to be carried out.

Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai's body will be cremated at Kariokor Crematorium on Saturday in a private funeral according to her wishes, her family and the government announced yesterday. Her remains will then be interred in the compound of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace & Environment Studies, her family said. The decision was reached after a high level meeting between the family, nine Permanents Secretaries and two PC's at the Office of the President.

A BURGLAR who left behind DNA evidence after he broke in to Boston Crematorium has been jailed for two years. Callum Baggaley, 22, also stole an elderly woman's handbag from a Boston residential home during a two month crime spree. Lincoln Crown Court heard Baggaley began his offending by smashing his way in to a vehicle which was parked under a carport in Spilsby Road.

After years of campaigning by councillors and nearby residents, the speed limit near Distington Crematorium will be lowered. The decision to reduce the limit on the C4011 from 60mph to 40mph was approved at the county council’s Local Committee meeting. The measure will now mean that the road, which also links villages such as Pica and Gilgarran, will have the same speed limit as that near Cumbria’s only other crematorium, in Carlisle.

A WEST Grinstead business owner has spoken about his ‘disappointment’ that a controversial plan to build a crematorium in the village was refused by Horsham District Council planners. As previously reported in the County Times, plans to establish a new crematorium just off the A272 Cowfold Road were heard in the Development Control South meeting where members agreed it should be rejected.

A DRUNK driver ploughed through a crowd of mourners at Nuneaton Crematorium as he led police on a chase in a car he had stolen from his dad. Scott Asson, aged 22, of no fixed address, was jailed for 18 months and banned from driving for four years by a judge at Warwick Crown Court after pleading guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving with excess alcohol and having no insurance or licence.

A MULTI-MILLION pound Vale facility offering families an alternative to traditional cemetery burials is set to begin serving the public on Monday (October 3). The £4m Vale of Glamorgan Memorial Park and Crematorium, set on a 20-acre site off Port Road East, Wenvoe, has the capacity to provide up to 1,300 cremations each year. Memoria Ltd chairman and chief operating officer, Howard Hodgson said the ethos was to provide 'an exceptional service given by people who care'.

AN EAST Lothian-based businessman has approached the local authority with a proposal to build a crematorium in the Tranent area of the county, the Courier has learned. East Lothian Council has confirmed that it has received a proposal from a private developer interested in establishing a crematorium in the county and that initial discussions have taken place with local authority officials, including principal amenities officer Stuart Pryde and councillors Kenny McLeod (Fa'side) and council leader Paul McLennan.

WEYMOUTH’S crematorium opened its doors to visitors for an open day after a £1million revamp. New economical cremators have been installed and the rear of the building extended to house a new abatement plant that filters out toxins and reduces air pollutants from the cremation process by 99 per cent. Ian Price, bereavement services manager, said the total budget was £1.4million but that the work had come in under-budget.
