THE price of cremation will rise by 15% in Guildford, after the borough council approved an increase in charges proposed to help offset the cost of making crematoria more eco-friendly. From November 14, the current rate of £504 per cremation will rise by 5%, with a further increase of 10% by April 2012, after Guildford Borough Council gave the proposals the go-ahead at a meeting last Thursday.

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to privatise the management of Haringey's cemeteries and crematorium will begin early next year after a contractor was chosen. The plan to hand the day-to-day running of the cemeteries in Wood Green and Tottenham, and Enfield Crematorium to private firm Dignity plc was agreed by councillors in November last year to save money. The council decided on the move to avoid having to find at least £6.6m in the next five years to invest in the service to meet emissions targets and to find new burial plots.

BURIAL space at Chelmsford Crematorium is likely to run out in ten years. Cllr Ian Grundy, Chelmsford Council’s cabinet member for safer communities, made the announcement during a discussion about an increase in cemetery and cremation fees at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday night. Last month Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami made a call for Flintshire Council to consider building a crematorium in Flintshire. Now Connah’s Quay Town Council has unanimously decided to back Mr Tami in his calls.

Relatives of a Bradford great-grandmother who lost her battle with cancer last month have hit out at a funeral director after a mix-up about where her ashes were being kept. W Levers, of Thornton Road, Bradford has admitted an “oversight” in the collection of Maureen McGuinness’s ashes from Scholemoor Crematorium. Relatives of the 72-year-old mother-of-seven, who died in Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice, say they were unsure of the whereabouts of the ashes for several days following her cremation on Friday, September 23.
