A carol service held at Truro’s Penmount Crematorium raised over £300 for a leading Cornish charity. Throughout 2010 staff at the crematorium have held events to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care. Each year they hold a carol service, on the second Thursday of December, and this year was no exception.

PEOPLE lit a candle and remembered loved ones at this year’s Lights of Love service at the Isle of Wight Crematorium. The event raised £274 for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, which will go towards the annual cost of patient care at the hospice.

A debt-ridden man who faked his own death has been caught red handed when detectives found his fingerprints on the death certificate. Alfredo Sanchez, who had stacked up huge credit card debts, tried to cheat insurers and enlisted his wife Sophie to help make the £1.25 million scam work. Mrs Sanchez, 43, presented officials with a certificate from the crematorium after her husband’s supposed funeral but it was found to have fingerprints of the ‘dead man’ on it.

COUNCIL OFFICIAL URGES BUCHAN COUNCILLORS TO APPROVE PROJECT FOR CRIMOND, SUBJECT TO CONDITIONS The race to build Aberdeenshire’s first crematorium is expected to clear another hurdle today. Plans for the £3million scheme at Crimond, between Peterhead and Fraserburgh, are due to go before members of the Buchan committee.

A crematorium running on solar energy is being built near Goraj Ashram in the city, a first of its kind initiative in the country of India. The trust which runs the ashram has been aggressively trying to implement the use of solar energy for various requirements at the hospital, school and other facilities set up by it. Earlier, solar power was used for cooking, power and other requirements at the school.

UNSUITABLE storage in Harrogate's crematorium – branded "unacceptable" after staff were forced to keep coffins in public areas because of a critical lack of space – is likely to be overhauled in the near future. A report recommending an extension to Stonefall Crematorium, which deals with nearly 1,500 services every year, is being presented to Harrogate Borough Council's cabinet member for public protection and rural affairs next week.

BEREAVEMENT bosses in Solihull have sparked an outcry after it was revealed they are exploring the possibility of “stacking” bodies before cremating them in order to save money. As part of an efficiency review, the council is looking into saving costs by conducting several cremations simultaneously rather than immediately after each funeral serviced.

A COUPLE went to their stillborn baby’s funeral only to find the ceremony had taken place without them. Matthew Small and Michelle Mahoney said they arrived 10 minutes late for daughter Angel’s burial at Thornhill Crematorium to find a minister had already presided over her interment and left the graveside. Distraught dad Matthew, 25, of Gabalfa, Cardiff, choked back tears as he described the couple’s double heartache. They learned Angel had died inside the womb when Michelle had a 32-week scan. The family travelled to the graveyard in taxis on Thursday to meet the car containing Angel’s coffin.

AFTER YEARS of campaigning and lobbying, Antonis Alakiotis (photo) may soon get what he and so many others have long demanded: a place to dispose of their remains as they see fit. “I expect Greece’s first crematorium, to be located in the Athens municipality of Zografou, to be finished in late 2011,” says Alakiotis, president of the Committee for the Right of Cremation in Greece.

A digger driver’s dying wish was granted when his coffin was transported to his funeral – in the bucket of a JCB. Great-grandfather Melvin Baker, 79, told friends and family he wanted to be taken to his final resting place in his favourite form of transport. A digger driver throughout his career, his former boss Keith Bell arranged for the vehicle to lead the procession from his family home to the church and crematorium.
