Grieving families were left distraught on Mother’s Day after chaotic scenes at a west Cumbrian crematorium hit by cuts, a councillor has claimed. Gillian Strickland, a Lowca parish councillor, said changes at Distington Crematorium have left an “unacceptable” level of service at its chapel of remembrance at weekends.

A state-of-the-art British crematorium has installed a webcasting facility, which will see the service broadcast via secure web link. It is perhaps now how most friends or family would wish to say goodbye but it will help elderly relatives or those living abroad.

A new crematorium serving East Devon and West Dorset will open its doors next week. Located just off the old A30 at Strete Ralegh near Whimple in Devon, the East Devon Crematorium will cater for an area stretching from Exmouth to Bridport, relieving the pressure on crematoria in Exeter, Taunton, Yeovil and Weymouth.

Work on Preston Crematorium’s cremators, which has meant the facility has had to close for two weeks, has been completed. As a result of the completion of the work, the crematorium, which celebrates 50 years of operation in 2012, will be able to hold services again from Monday April 4. The cremators have been replaced in order to comply with legislation aimed at reducing mercury output and improving efficiency.

The first phase of a £3million investment into Weston’s ?crematorium has been unveiled, with plans for a new five-acre memorial and cemetery. Dignity Funeral Services made a pledge to upgrade the Ebdon Road site in Worle after taking it over from North Somerset Council two years ago. This week, the firm set out a proposal to upgrade the cremators, refurbish the chapel and create a new memorial garden on five acres of farming land next to the site.

Petition launched against multimillion-pound plan in buchan A ROW has erupted over plans to build a multimillion-pound crematorium in the heart of rural Buchan. The scheme is earmarked for a 14-acre plot south of Mintlaw, between Longside and Stuartfield. Peterhead funeral director Robert Mackie is behind the plan, which is proposed for land at West Knock Farm, owned by local councillor Albert Howie. Former Banff and Buchan MP Sir Albert McQuarrie is acting as development consultant for project leaders Kinmundy Crematorium Ltd.

Fundraisers at St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice have thanked generous bereaved family members and Crewe Crematorium for a donation of £8,333. The cash has been raised through funeral donations and the crematorium also put forward some money. Fundraiser Claire Frith said: “This kind donation will be used to help St Luke’s Hospice to continue offering care to patients and their families. Every penny will be used to provide the very special care they need during a very difficult time in their lives.”

The sale of Bretby Crematorium could take place after the local elections in May. The news came after it was revealed that no date had yet been set to make a decision over the controversial sale, and elections are little over a month away. South Derbyshire District Council approved the £8 million sale at its finance and management meeting on March 17, while delegated powers have been handed to Tory councillor Richard Grosvenor, leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council. Conservatives at the district council unanimously voted to sell off the asset, while Labour councillors voted against.
